Just a quick note and update on the transplanting effort here at Oakhill Organics—by the end of today, we will have planted into the fields (many varieties of each type): snap peas, snow peas, sunflowers, green onions, bush beans, spinach, beets, lettuce, salad mix, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli raab, turnips, mustard greens, kohlrabi, swiss chard, kale, zucchini, winter squash, pumpkins, onions, shallots, leeks, Brussels sprouts, popcorn, and ornamental corn. We have also direct sown carrots, radishes, arugula, mizuna and tatsoi. And last Saturday we planted three beds of potatoes: Yukon golds, reds, russets, and Russian banana fingerlings. Everything is growing beautifully—it looks like we’re going to have a mighty tasty season!
(Of course, I must note two bumps along the way: some unknown pest is nibbling on our peas, and the popcorn and ornamental corn starts were slightly damaged in a freakishly late frost last night. The peas should be fine—they’re outpacing the bugs—and we’re hoping that the corn survives too. Don’t worry though; there’s lots of sweet corn still waiting to be planted, and much more coming after that.)
That is an amazing variety of plants. It all sounds very yummy. I wish we were close enough to join your CSA. Then I would not even have to plant my own garden this year. Our weather is still colder than normal for this time of year.
Will you be publishing receipes for your produce as it comes up seasonally? I think I remember you mentioning this and I hope you do. You are both such great cooks that I hope you have the time to share your ideas.
Good luck protecting your babies from weather and bugs. We used alot of DDT when I was a kid but that probably is not an option:) Love, Mom
