Two upcoming events

Mac Farmers’ Market opens Thursday!

The McMinnville Farmers’ Market opens for the season this Thursday, May 28. Market is on Cowls Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets, and runs from 1:30 – 6:00 pm.

For the last three years, Oakhill Organics was a vendor at market, but as you know this year we will not be attending any longer in order to focus all our energy on our popular CSA program. However, some great vendors will be there this year, including old favorites and some promising new farms. If you’re a CSA member looking for extra produce or other agricultural products (cheese, honey, fruit, meat, etc.), definitely check out the Mac Market offerings!

Come to our free farming workshop Saturday!

Your very own CSA farmers — Casey and Katie Kulla — will be leading a free two-hour workshop titled ‘Plan your fall and winter vegetable garden!’ Saturday, May 30, 2 – 4pm, in the Carnegie Room at the McMinnville Public Library. Sponsored by Slow Food Yamhill County, this workshop is back for a second year by popular demand!

We grow and harvest vegetables year-round on our Grand Island farm without the use of greenhouses. In this workshop, we will share their insights into cold season gardening. Topics covered will include:

  • the incentives to grow year-round
  • selecting cold hardy varieties
  • sowing and transplanting timing and tips
  • special winter cultural requirements
  • winter harvest challenges and pests
  • tools, helpful resources, and more.
  • New this year will also be an update on year-round growing amidst extreme winter conditions such as last December’s extended snowstorm.

Information will be presented at a level useful for the experienced gardener or production grower, but all are welcome. No RSVP necessary for participation.
