Quarry hearing tomorrow!!!!!!

(CSA Newsletter: Week 40)

Meet this week’s vegetables:

  • Fall Salad mix — A mix of tender and hardier fall greens: lettuce, radicchio, escarole, parsley, and arugula. For best enjoyment, toss with a sweet or creamy dressing and let wilt slightly before eating.
  • Romanesco OR Dino kale
  • Sweet peppers — We picked another 700 lbs of sweet peppers last week! This fall has produced a true bumper crop of peppers!
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Winter squash — Your choice between Butternut or Ambercup squash.
  • Yellow onions — These are a classic ‘cooking’ onion. They have drier stronger flavored flesh, which means that they’re too hot (for most people) for fresh eating but cook up to be extra sweet!

After months of waiting, wondering, preparing, hoping, fearing, worrying, and praying, we’ll be testifying in opposition of the proposed quarry before the Yamhill County Commissioners tomorrow afternoon. The hearing begins at 1 pm at the McMinnville Community Center (600 NE Evans St). Bodies in support are welcome!

It’s been quite a haul getting to this point — there have been many moments where we’ve lost steam and felt uninspired to continue. But we, and many other committed farmers and residents, have persevered and continued researching, writing letters, writing our own testimony, organizing, etc.

We won’t have an answer tomorrow. It’s unlikely the commissioners will be able to vote at this hearing since the opposition will be submitting new testimony to consider. So, then we’ll be back to waiting again. Our work is not over yet, but this hearing will be a clear step towards some sort of decision.

Since we still have lots to do to prepare, I’m going to keep this newsletter short this week.

Thank you for all your support on this quarry fight, and enjoy this week’s vegetables!

Your farmers, Katie & Casey Kulla

P.S. Remember to submit your 2011 sign-up form by next Tuesday, November 16!

P.P.S. We will be having our annual Thanksgiving Holiday Harvest on Wednesday, November 24, 2-4 pm! I’ll put this list of available items in next week’s newsletter. It will include fresh eating greens, cooking greens, winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, leeks, garlic, and other tasty fresh vegetables. You’ll need to order ahead of time, so look for the list and further instructions next week!
