Abundance!!!!!!!!!

(CSA Newsletter: Week 28)

Meet this week’s vegetables:

  • Eggplant — Lots of eggplant this week! Check out the serving suggestions in this week’s newsletter.
  • Green or yellow beans — A generous pound of fresh beans for you to eat this week.
  • Tomatoes — Tomato abundance is upon us! Three pounds of tomatoes for each share this week! I’m sure many of you will have no problem eating these fresh on salads, sandwiches, or on their own. However, if you’re overwhelmed, you can always pop whole fresh tomatoes into a freezer bag and freeze for use in stews and soups this winter (no need to blanche!). To make for easier work in the winter, we like to cut off the top of the tomato before bagging up, but it’s not absolutely necessary.
  • Broccoli
  • Beets — These beets are absolutely amazing — quite possibly the sweetest beets we’ve ever grown. We’ve been enjoying them slow roasted at 350° until tender all the way through (chop them into smaller chunks for a quicker cooking time). The greens are also delicious cooked as you might prepare chard or kale.
  • Cucumbers — The cucumbers are finally beginning to slow down … Enjoy them while they last these next couple weeks!
  • Summer squash/zucchini
  • Romaine lettuce — If you didn’t before, try out the Caesar salad recipe we gave out a few weeks ago. It’s a perfect dinner salad at the end of a hot August day.
  • We have a problem here on the farm — it’s a good kind of problem to have — so many of our summer crops are ready to pick in such large abundance that we have a hard time deciding what to put in each week’s share. Even with cutting out some of the vegetables that can hold well in the field until later weeks, for the past many weeks (this week included), your share has been valued far over the $20 you paid for. Like we said: a good problem to have. Enjoy this week’s summer vegetable gifts!

CSA Potluck at farm this weekend!
    5 pm, Saturday, August 22

You are all invited to join us on the farm for a fun community potluck this Saturday. We’ll give a farm tour or two for those of you want to see the fields in their summer glory, and generally enjoy each other’s company while we eat good food.

Please bring a dish of food or beverage to share as well as plates, cups and utensils for your family. We’ll have extra available, but we don’t have enough for everyone (and we try very hard to avoid disposable plates, etc.). The gathering will begin at 5 pm, with food served soon after.

Directions to the farm: From McMinnville, take HWY-18 south out of town headed east. Take the Dayton exit and drive straight through town. Stay on the same road (Wallace Rd/HWY-221) for about seven mils until you see blue road signs for Heiser Pumpkin Patch. Turn LEFT onto Grand Island Rd. Stay on this road as it crosses the bridge and drops down onto the island. At the first 4-way intersection on the island, turn RIGHT onto SE Upper Island Rd. Our driveway is immediately on your left. We share the driveway with our neighbor, and our property is on the right side of the drive. Welcome! (Call if you have any questions 503-474-7661.)
