It’s been far too long since I uploaded any photos of the farm. I’ve taken many, but we’ve just been busy enough to prevent sharing them on the blog. To make up for it, here are a few photos we took on the first day of fall. The fields are definitely looking autumnal, as you will see:

Casey walking through our recently sown over-wintered greens field. Last Wednesday, we sowed 17 beds of various mustards, tatsoi, arugula, spinach, and more. They’ve already begun germinating and will continue to grow through the coldest weather for harvest in winter!

Arugula seed leaves pushing up against row cover (the white gauzy cloth we use to increase germination and warm the soil). These were sown on September 10.

The second of three large ‘brassica’ (cole crops) plantings intended for fall and winter harvest. In the foreground are over-wintering cauliflower plants — some of the most beautiful plants in the fields. They should head in late March or April.

Our first big brassica planting of the year (planted in July), which is starting to produce already …

Fall broccoli is delicious!

… and the cabbage are heading!

Our Brussels sprouts (planted in May) have also grown a lot!

Ok, just kidding — they’re really only waist-high, but that still means we have a lot of delicious sprouts for eating all winter!

We’ve also been tending to our cover crop on next year’s field. We drilled it three weeks ago and have been dutifully irrigating it since.

The warm weather last week helped everything green up and grow.

And, since it’s been awhile, a final photo of our cute farm cats: Mokum and Nelson! Aw … Happy fall, everyone!
Love the photos!
The photo of the broccoli reminds me a lot of a shot I took in my own garden back in July. http://picasaweb.google.com/jollus/GardenShots#5221945390513094770
This was my first time growing broccoli in my backyard, and I had a really great year for it.
