Thursday was opening day of the 2007 McMinnville Farmers’ Market! And—wow—was it a successful first day! Despite the afternoon heat (over 90°!), the market was bustling, much more so than last year on almost day. I think that word has finally gotten out that Mac has an awesome little market, because we saw a lot of new people walking through (as well as the regulars from last year).
The market overall has a lot to offer this year. In addition to returning vendors (who are all constantly improving their offerings), we have many newcomers who increase the market’s diversity. The market now offers almost everything you’d need for a week’s groceries: fruit, vegetables, berries, goat cheese, cow cheese, butter!, pork, beef, hazelnuts, bread, eggs, mushrooms, grains, herbs, jam, sauces, wine, flowers, & more!—all of it locally produced! And that doesn’t even include all the fabulous craft vendors.
And the Oakhill Organics booths (we’re a double booth presence now!) were also a success. Planning ahead for market, we weren’t sure how much product to bring, since we didn’t want to sell out too soon or have lots of leftovers. But we decided to bring more than we thought we could sell, just in case. Well, I think we underestimated the 2007 market, because even at that we almost completely sold out by the end of the day. We sold every single bag of greens—arugula, spinach, and salad mix—and we brought a lot since those have consistently been our best sellers. Even the kale sold well!
Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi and/or buy produce. If you missed it, we hope you’ll come by this week or another time this summer. We should have our greens (salad mix, lettuce, etc.) every week, as well as other seasonal veggies. Right now those include spring roots like beets, radishes and turnips, but more is on the way. The Mac Market is truly worth checking out, and our late closing hour hopefully accommodates your work schedule. Market is on Thursday afternoons, from 1:30 to 6:30, on Cowls Street between 2nd & 3rd. See you there!
