Minnesota heirlooms

Here’s a link to a great article written recently about friends of ours in Minnesota. They also started a vegetable farm this year, but they focus primarily on growing heirloom varieties for specialty markets in the twin cities. The article is well written and gave me such a warm glowing picture of what James and Courie are doing that I just had to share it! Here’s the opening paragraph:

I couldn’t see him. But when I heard the high-pitched “Mom, look at that,” I knew the toddler with the megaphone squeal was referring to me. More specifically, he was mesmerized by the enormous gnarled green pumpkin in my arms. The one that looked as if it had been cultivated on Mars. The one with the wildly exotic name: Marina di Chioggia. The one that caused grower James Fitzgerald’s eyes to light up when I asked him about it. The one that compelled seven people to stop and ask me about it as I lugged it across the Midtown Public Market to my car. The one that breaks my heart as I consider cutting into such unearthly beauty.
