Time to sign up for 2013!

Meet this week’s vegetables:

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Eggplant
  • Cucumbers
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Chard/collards
  • Summer squash
  • Red cipollini
  • Basil

We’re beginning our next season sign-ups a little earlier than normal this year. This is in large part because of the big expansion/transition to having the “Full Diet CSA” offering — we want to know what numbers we’re looking at (for both the Full Diet and veggie only) so that we can be planning in advance to meet everyone’s needs!

Sign-up forms are available to download at the bottom of this post (or printed on paper at pick-up). Please return your complete sign-ups to us by October 23. Here’s a quick recap of the offerings for 2013:

Vegetable CSA continues!

Thanks to feedback from our current members, the vegetable-based CSA will continue in 2013. You can find the sign-up at the bottom of this post.

We’re keeping the format the same as in 2012, so you can choose the number of items you want and then mix and match at pick-up. You may notice the prices are slightly higher (not much though) — this is to accommodate the general rise in the cost of our expenses (fuel, inputs — things keep going up, and we’re just seeing some of the effects of general inflation now).

We haven’t pinned down the pick-up location yet for the veggie CSA — it will be somewhere convenient in downtown McMinnville (possibly still at the Granary District or a location nearby). Day and time will continue to be Tuesdays from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.

After much consideration of our farm’s resources, we have unfortunately decided to discontinue the Newberg veggie pick-up in 2013. Newberg folks are of course welcome to participate by picking up in McMinnville.

There are two payment options for the veggie CSA — single and quarterly. Your first payment will be due by January 10, or you can include it with your sign-up form.

Full Diet begins!

And, of course, 2013 will be the inaugural season for our farm’s “Full Diet CSA.” If you are unaware of what this entails, we recommend checking out the extensive information on our website here. We’ve had more initial interest in this program than we anticipated, so priority will be given to existing members and people who contacted us early on (we’ve kept a list!). If you are serious about participating, please return your form to us as soon as possible.

The sign-up form for the Full Diet program is a little longer and more detailed than for the veggie CSA — please take time filling it out fully. Also, please note that while your first full payment won’t be due until January 10, we have decided to request a $150 deposit paid at the time of the sign-up. This will help us continue to build up for next year during this fall season. You are also welcome to make your first payment now if you would like.

If you have any questions or concerns about either CSA option, please call (503-474-7661) or email us: farm (at) oakhillorganics (dot) org.

In other farm news, we’re feeling pretty bewildered by the continued dryness even as signs of fall show up in our fields. We’ve heard geese a few mornings (sure sign of the cold season!) and even had frost on some surfaces over the weekend. Casey is bundling up now to milk the cows in the earliest morning light. And yet, today (Monday) the high is supposed to be in the mid- to upper-80s, and the fields that haven’t been irrigated are bone dry. You can see the dryness in the air as dust flies off of fields as farmers till in their crop stubble.

Also, even as the season shifts, the people in the fields have been too. Two new employees have joined us: Nathan and Jasper, who will both be sticking around for a while. Welcome Nathan and Jasper! One of our other employees, Chloe, is returning to OSU to finish her degree and will be in the fields part-time this fall. Good luck Chloe! And, Jesse is still here — yay Jesse!

And, here in our home, we’re enjoying the new dynamic of a new (very little) person in our slightly larger family. Dottie is growing by leaps and bounds (and sleeping a ton). She spent about two seconds in newborn-size clothing, so those have all been packed up to give away. Last night we had our first mostly calm evening as a family — Dottie napped beside me as I did some farm paperwork while Rusty tried to calmly fall asleep on his own in bed.

We hope the start of school went well for everyone and that you’re making the best of these final warm days! Enjoy this week’s abundant summer vegetables!

Your farmers, Katie & Casey Kulla
… and the rest of the farm crew!
