May is …

First fruits!

Here on the farm, May is a vibrant month full of work and wonder. May is one part spring and one part summer, making for a varied experience that is always beautiful and lovely. May is a time for:

The first of the strawberries (Hoods! — see above!)

Strawberry tummy aches (hard to restrain ourselves at first)

New green growth all around

Butterflies and wildflowers

Arugula blossoms

Planting, planting, planting

Setting up the irrigation and moving pipe

Clover

Eating dinner outside at the picnic table

Wearing rain jackets and sandals (at the same time!)

Washing woolens and putting them away for the summer

Lettuce! Kale! Chard! Greens! Oh my!

Refreshing rains

Earthworm hunting

Slugs (I will spare you a photo — ha!)

The final rapini and winter leeks

Thunder, lightning, and hail (occasionally)

Grass! (and shedding!)

Bird songs everywhere

Sweet onion omelets for dinner

Outdoor adventures of all kinds

Fruit growing everywhere

Building rope swings

Trellising (and eating) snap peas

Mud puddles for playing

Green garlic

… and so much more.

May is a month to savor. Enjoy this week’s vegetables!

Meet this week’s vegetables:

  • Strawberries!!!! Yes, they’re here! That photo wasn’t just a teaser. These are Hoods — which we humbly think are The Best Strawberry Ever Anywhere.
  • Salad mix — As Rusty would say: “Attention everybody!” There are no more chicories in the salad mix! Some tasty sweet kale and such, but mostly just good tender spring lettuce. Ooh la la.
  • Snap peas — Oh yes, how good is May? It just gets better! The first of the snap peas are here. Earlier than normal (for us), but we are not going to complain about that! Even better, I (Katie) got to help pick them this week while the kids played in the fields. That was one of the highlights of my week, by far. Besides eating tummies full of strawberries of course.
  • Bok choy — Chop it, saute it with green garlic. Boom — it’s delicious.
  • Chard
  • Leeks
  • Green garlic
